Canada International Student Program: New Regulations and Opportunities

As of November 15, 2024, Canada continues to enhance its reputation as a top destination for international students. Known for its diverse society, world-class educational institutions, and promising opportunities for post-graduation work or immigration, Canada is focusing on making its International Student Program more sustainable and secure and hence increase protection measures of Canada International Student Program.

Key Changes to the International Student Program

The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, has announced significant regulatory changes aimed at protecting international students and reinforcing the integrity of the program.

Increased Work Hours for Students

One of the most impactful changes allows eligible international students to work up to 24 hours per week off campus during academic sessions. This adjustment provides students with greater financial flexibility and practical experience in their fields of study.

Strengthened Compliance Measures

International students now need to obtain a new study permit before changing learning institutions. This measure ensures that students maintain their focus and commitment to their chosen educational paths.

Accountability for Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs)

DLIs are crucial in maintaining the program’s integrity. Since 2015, efforts have been made to enhance student compliance reporting. Institutions that fail to submit compliance reports or verify acceptance letters could face suspension from admitting new international students for up to a year.

Specifics for Quebec

Quebec’s DLIs have not yet participated in compliance reporting but are working with IRCC to establish this system. A grace period is currently in place for Quebec DLIs to adapt to these new requirements.

Success of the Letter of Acceptance Verification

Since December 1, 2023, Canada has verified nearly 492,000 Letters of Acceptance (LOAs) through its new system, thereby identifying and addressing fraudulent applications. This process ensures that only legitimate applications are approved, safeguarding the program’s integrity.

Quick Facts for Prospective Students

– Eligibility for Off-Campus Work: Full-time students in qualifying programs can work off-campus without a work permit.
– Full-Time Work During Breaks: Students can work full-time during academic breaks, such as summer or winter holidays.

Invitation to Apply

These enhancements to the International Student Program offer a robust framework for students to thrive academically and professionally in Canada. Prospective international students are encouraged to apply early to take advantage of these opportunities and become part of Canada’s vibrant academic community.
